About the Safe Second course:
Belaying and seconding rock climbing skills course
Perhaps you have friends who already go rock climbing and you’d like to join in safely; or you would like to join a climbing or mountaineering club and need to be able to tie in and belay safely as a minimum; or you are looking for more confidence in belaying and seconding a lead climber in varying circumstances. This course is the perfect way to learn the fundamental climbing skills and become a confident and safe ‘second’. Such a foundation will open up a mountain of possible adventures ahead of you!
Additional skills can be picked up along the way or equally you can return to us to build on your knowledge.

Objectives of the Safe Second course:
Some of the skills that may be covered depending on ability and experience:
- Climbing movement technique
- Equipment required to be a safe second
- Using a guide book and interpreting grades
- Tying in and bottom rope belaying
- Buddy check
- Making yourself safe on a belay
- Belaying a lead climber, holding falls, weight differences
- Climbing communications
- Taking gear out
- Protect yourself while abseiling
Included:
- Highly qualified and experienced rock climbing instructor
- Use of all essential rock climbing equipment such as climbing harness, helmet, belay device, ropes.
All you will need to bring:
- Warm, comfortable clothing appropriate to the day. It is always worth packing waterproofs.
- Packed lunch and a drink
- Comfy trainers to climb in (or climbing shoes if you have some).
- A ‘Go for it’ mental attitude
If you have your own personal climbing equipment, such as harness, helmet, belay device, screw gate karabiner etc. do please bring them along.
Previous experience:
You may be a complete beginner wishing to try rock climbing for the first time. Or, you have some previous experience climbing or bouldering indoors and/or outdoors but would like to hone your rope skills for belaying, as well as dealing with gear, whilst keeping yourself and your climbing partner as safe as possible.
