About the course:

This is a three-day hill and moorland walking personal skills development course with the aim to prepare you to feel confident to plan adventurous day walks in summer, on open hill moorland terrain such as Dartmoor. We will look at everything from clothing and equipment requirements to planning and navigation, weather and emergency procedures as well as access and conservation considerations. There is much to consider and plan for, to ensure you have an enjoyable adventure – leaving only footprints, and taking home memories, photos and what you took in!

OBJECTIVES:

  • Walking and route finding
  • Navigation
  • Hazards and emergency procedures
  • Equipment
  • Group management
  • Access, conservation and environmental knowledge
  • Weather
  • Background knowledge

Included:

  • Highly experienced and qualified instructor

All you will need to bring:

  • Clothing which can be worn in layers, including a warm jumper in all seasons
  • Waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers
  • Waterproof walking boots
  • Warm hat and gloves in Autumn/Winter/Spring
  • Sunhat/cap in Summer
  • Suncream
  • Sunglasses
  • Headtorch and spare batteries
  • Water bottle (at least 2 litres)
  • Packed lunch and snacks
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Your spirit of adventure

If you have walking poles, it can be a good idea to bring them. Gaiters also help to keep your feet dry and protect your lower legs/trousers from spiky plants. A flask with hot drink can be worth its weight in gold!

Accommodation and transfers to/from the starting points are not included.

Physicality:

A reasonable level of fitness and ability to walk approximately 8 miles a day over uneven terrain is essential. Much of Dartmoor is rough, hilly and often boggy terrain, sometimes off the beaten track, and may have small rivers to cross, over slippery surfaces.

Previous experience:

The course is suitable for beginners, although some hill walking experience would be an advantage.
