About the Learning the Ropes 5 day course

This is a full beginner to independent, indoor to outdoor, top roping, abseiling and rigging course, to equip you with an understanding of the skills and judgement required to climb safely outside.

New to climbing? Fallen in love with climbing indoors? Inspired by pictures of climbing on the wild side but learning to lead climb seems like daunting prospect? This robust course will fast track your skills in rope work and climbing on real rock thus enabling you to find your way around the single pitch crags, practicing top roping and abseiling whilst meeting others and learning new skills along the way. This is the key to climbing safely as a climbing pair outside without need to lead.

Objectives:

  • Equipment requirements
  • Navigating the crag and selecting a suitable climb with a guidebook
  • Selecting and rigging anchors for bottom rope set ups
  • Natural anchors, placed protection, in-situ gear
  • Knot craft and rigging made easy
  • Placing and rating protection
  • Equalising sling belays
  • Climbing ethics, etiquette and environmental impact
  • Assessing risk
  • Rigging and safeguarding an abseil
  • Self-protection while rigging and abseiling
  • Evaluating your own ability and development
  • Problem avoidance and solutions

Included:

  • Highly qualified and experienced rock climbing instructor
  • Use of all essential rock climbing equipment such as climbing harness, helmet, belay device, ropes
  • Unless otherwise stated, the Learning the Ropes – Top Roping, Abseiling and Rigging course will be run privately for you, meaning you benefit from a personalised activity, focusing on your individual interests, ability and goals.

All you will need to bring:

  • Warm, comfortable clothing appropriate to the day. It is always worth packing waterproofs.
  • Packed lunch and a drink
  • Comfy trainers to climb in (or climbing shoes if you have some).
  • A ‘Go for it’ mental attitude

If you have your own personal climbing equipment, such as harness, helmet, belay device, screw gate karabiner etc. do please bring them along.

Previous experience:

Perhaps you’re a keen indoor climber with minimal or no outdoor climbing experience, or simply wanting to improve your outdoor climbing skills. Being able to tie in, belay and climb with some confidence will put you in good stead for getting the most from this course, although there will be plenty of practice of these skills throughout the course.

Testimonials:

Our courses tend to be privately run, and can be adapted to your wishes. Heidi, who already had a good foundation of climbing experience, chose to focus on improving her lead climbing skills:

“Excellent 5 day learn to lead course
I did a five day outdoor learn to lead course with Mike. I really enjoyed the course and found Mike to be very knowledgeable, skilled and professional. Mike was very flexible and was able to run the course in locations and times that worked around my needs. He was great at explaining things and very kind and patient. Mike also had some useful advice in terms of climbing equipment and places to climb in the area. To help us retain all the information we covered in the week he also had some great suggestions and was happy to give advice after the course. I would highly recommend Mike as an instructor.”
