About the Placing Protection course:
This half day Placing Protection session will take place on the ground at a crag, looking at placing leader protection in preparation for learning to lead climb. This will include rating your chocks, wires, hexes and friend placements so that you go away with a sound understanding of the safe judgement required to assess the rock and know what a solid and safe piece of protection looks and behaves like.
Perhaps you are an experienced indoor climber who have been seconding rock climbs outdoors and are looking to gain a good foundation in placing good protection.
There may be a discount for booking two Climbing Workshops as a full 1 day course combination.
Objectives of the Placing Protection course:
- We’ll look at a comprehensive lead rack and the strength ratings of equipment
- Racking equipment on your harness
- Geology
- Different types of placement e.g. V, parallel, horizontal, flared, shallow, micro cracks
- Visualising good placements and gauging the size you need
- Rating your placements from poor to ‘bomb proof’
- Simulate placing protection whilst on a hard move (bouldering)
Included:
- Highly qualified and experienced rock climbing instructor
- Use of all essential rock climbing equipment such as climbing harness, helmet, belay device, ropes
All you will need to bring:
- Warm, comfortable clothing appropriate to the day. It is always worth packing waterproofs
- A drink
- Packed lunch for a full day course
- Comfy trainers to climb in (or climbing shoes if you have some).
- A ‘Go for it’ mental attitude
If you have your own personal climbing equipment, such as harness, helmet, belay device, screw gate karabiner etc. do please bring them along.
Previous experience:
Being able to tie in and belay would be helpful. The course is best suited for those with some rock climbing experience and are ready to consider taking the bold step into lead climbing.
