About the activity:

Caves are complex both in terms of navigation and the risks involved, so learning to be an independent caver is an intricate journey in itself.

This two-day caving skills development course will give you a good understanding of the foundation skills, inherent risks and equipment required to get involved in caving with a greater degree of safety and knowledge.

Objectives:

  • Caving equipment requirements
  • Water safety underground
  • Weather
  • A basic understanding of geology and hydrology
  • Access and cave conservation
  • A basic understanding of different types of caving
  • Safeguarding each other while moving around a cave
  • Use of a rope underground
  • Navigation underground
  • The implication of accidents underground

Included:

  • Highly qualified and experienced caving instructor
  • Cave entry fee
  • Use of all essential caving equipment such as caving suit, belt, helmet, torch (and wellington boots on request).

All you will need to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy such as a dark-coloured T-shirt and leggings/long trousers, and a lightweight jumper if you feel the cold (please note – the mud will stain light coloured clothing!)
  • Wellington boots if you have any (otherwise these can be provided on request)
  • It is recommended to bring a change of clothes to change into afterwards
  • Drinks
  • Packed lunches
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Your parent or guardian to accompany you if you are a child
  • Your sense of adventure!

Previous experience:

You will have ideally been caving down Pridhamsleigh at least five times and Bakers Pit twice before in the last year (we are happy to discuss your other caving experience). A good level of mobility is important as caving is likely to involve crouching, crawling and easy scrambling on uneven and slippery ground.
