ACTIVITY POSSIBILITIES:

With a geological history stretching back 500 million years, the glacier-carved Lake District with its imposing mountain crags, U-shaped valleys, lakes, forest-pocketed fells, pastoral lowlands and pretty villages offers dramatic, often brooding, yet soul-enriching scenery of a unique, ethereal quality. It has been a place that has inspired artists of all kinds, including perhaps most famously the writer and illustrator Alfred Wainwright who celebrated 214 of the mountains and hills in his Pictorial Guides published between 1952 and 1966. These books have inspired hikers, on a quest to ‘bag’ Wainwright’s summits, whilst enjoying some of the very best walking to reach them. There is a trek to suit everyone here, and we will be happy to suggest and guide you on a route that best suits your interests.

The Lake District also has excellent scrambling and rock climbing possibilities that we can incorporate into your programme if you wish.

Physicality:

Hikes in the Lake District often take place over rough, steep terrain, which can be slippery, particularly when wet. Mountain weather can be very changeable, and it can be cold at altitude and in the wind. Days out in the mountains can be quite strenuous and challenging, so a good level of physical fitness will aid your enjoyment. The length will depend on the exact route taken, but you should be prepared for a long day out, with 10 miles being a reasonably comfortable distance for you. We keep the pace at a level to suit you, so that you can enjoy the sights along the way, whilst bearing in mind the ground that needs to be covered (short cuts/backtracking will take place if necessary. Your safety is our number one consideration.

Previous experience:

Previous hikes on hilly and uneven ground, taking in several miles is recommended, as are well worn-in walking boots. No previous scrambling or rock climbing experience is necessary should you wish those activities to be included. We will discuss your experience, interests, requirements and fitness level in order to select suitable routes and activities.
