About the course:

This night navigation course is a great way to test what you have learnt on a previous course in more challenging conditions, and polish up your skills.

It is an optional bolt on to the beginner and intermediate navigation courses or you may book this as a stand-alone course if you have good navigation experience or are perhaps preparing for a Mountain Leader assessment.

Equally this can be a fun evening out to practice your skills, look at the stars and feel the remoteness of Dartmoor at night.

The skills covered will depend on your previous experience and what you wish to learn.

Objectives:

  • Navigating by compass and by the stars
  • The 5 D’s
  • Accurate measurements
  • Pacing, timing, taking and walking on a bearing
  • Features
  • Relocating

Included:

  • Highly experienced and qualified instructor
  • Use of essential navigation equipment (i.e. map and compass)

All you will need to bring:

  • Clothing which can be worn in layers, including a warm jumper in all seasons
  • Waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers
  • Waterproof walking boots
  • Warm hat and gloves in Autumn/Winter/Spring
  • Headtorch and spare batteries
  • Water bottle (at least 1 litre)
  • Snacks
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Your sense of humour

If you have walking poles, it can be a good idea to bring them (although these may need to be juggled with map, compass, reading glasses…). Gaiters also help to keep your feet dry and protect your lower legs/trousers from spiky plants. A flask with hot drink can be worth its weight in gold!

Physicality:

The walking distance covered on this course tends to be no more than five miles, but this can be over very rough ‘off the beaten track’, hilly and sometimes boggy terrain, so a moderate level of fitness will be helpful, as would well worn-in walking boots.

Previous experience:

Walking experience over rough ground would be helpful. No previous experience in navigation is required, but if you have none you may wish to begin with our beginner/intermediate courses first in order to gain the most from the evening.
