About the Security on Steep Ground course:

This one day course focuses on basic ropework, and simple belaying techniques for security on steep ground, when on consequential or mixed terrain, such as when scrambling. To introduce and practice the skills, this course will be run on Dartmoor.

Whilst hill walking will rarely require the use of a rope, in the mountains it is worth carrying an appropriate length for those occasions when the confidence it inspires at areas of risk can go a long way to assist a nervous member of your group, or in situations when a short abseil over a rocky step is required, for example.

Learning these skills on Dartmoor will give you a good skills base for use on future adventures in the mountains.

Top Tip: If you would like a longer course, based in the mountains, we offer scrambling options in Eryri (Snowdonia) and other mountainous areas of the UK.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Route planning
  • Assessing risk and consequential terrain
  • When to use a rope
  • Confidence roping
  • Indirect belaying vs direct belaying as a simple safety line
  • Classic abseil

Physicality:

The walking distance covered on this course tends to be no more than five miles per day, but this can be over very rough ‘off the beaten track’, hilly and sometimes boggy terrain, so a moderate level of fitness will be helpful, as would well worn-in walking boots.

Previous experience:

Best suited to competent hill and moorland walkers, this is a ideal progression from the Hill Skills Development course.
