About the indoor lead climbing course:

Learning to lead indoors is a good first step up to your life of rock climbing and will give you the confidence and fundamental skills to progress to real rock sport climbing outside.
On this indoor ‘learn to lead’ course, we will coach you the skills and judgement take your independence in climbing to the next level.

The course will take place at an indoor climbing wall in South Devon e.g. in Plymouth, Buckfastleigh or Exeter (we can discuss which one will be best for you).

Please Note: This lead climbing course is often taken over two half-days to minimise muscle fatigue. We are happy to discuss this with you.

We would recommend combining this with other Learn to Lead courses for a more in-depth learning experience. There may be a discount for course combinations. Please enquire for details.

Objectives:

  • Tying in, belay set up and buddy check
  • Climbing fluidly whilst finding positive clipping positions
  • Route reading, assessing the risk and consequence of potential falls
  • Lead belaying, belayer position, anticipating the climber’s moves
  • Working the crux, rope position while climbing, resting and repetitive falls
  • Dynamic belaying, the dynamic catch, brake assisted belay devices
  • Lower offs
  • Climbing wall etiquette
  • Red pointing and ethics
  • Using auto belays

Included:

  • Highly qualified and experienced instructor
  • Use of all essential rock climbing equipment such as climbing harness, helmet, belay device, ropes

All you will need to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing appropriate to the day.
  • Climbing wall entry fee when the course takes place indoors (not included)
  • A drink
  • Packed lunch for a full day course
  • Comfy trainers to climb in (or climbing shoes if you have some).
  • A ‘Go for it’ mental attitude

If you have your own personal climbing equipment, such as harness, belay device, screw gate karabiner etc. do please bring them along.

Previous experience:

Being able to tie in and belay safely is important (of course we’ll check this and help where needed). This indoor course is best suited for indoor/outdoor climbers looking for an introduction to lead climbing.
