About the Rock Climbing and Abseiling taster:
Are you looking to try rock climbing and abseiling in Devon? On this beginner’s rock climbing and abseiling taster, we’ll take you to a beautiful location on Dartmoor or nearby location in South Devon.
Whether you are on holiday in Devon, or based near the South Hams, Exeter, Torbay or Plymouth we are blessed with a selection of rock ‘gems’ to climb locally. From the quartz-granulated granite of the Dartmoor Tors to the crystal-encrusted coastal limestone of Torbay, there is an enticing variety of rock climbing routes.
Based on your previous experience we will tailor the rock climbing and abseiling taster to suit your ability and confidence. Rock climbing wouldn’t be so exhilarating if it wasn’t little bit physically challenging, a little bit scary but above all safe and fun.
Your experienced instructor will help you to develop your skills and enable you to take this amazing sport onwards and upwards as you wish.
This rock climbing taster would likely take place at The Dewerstone, Chudleigh Rocks, Haytor, Hound Tor or Meadfoot, though other venues on Dartmoor or by the coast are possible.
Top Tip: A popular option is to combine Half Day Climbing or Abseiling with Caving at Pridhamsleigh Cavern or Sea Level Traversing, or a half day Navigation Course to make a super-fun Multi-Activity Adventure Day! Please contact us for details.

Testimonials for our Rock Climbing and Abseiling Tasters:
“We loved everything about our session with Mike, and emails with Helen was easy and friendly. I really liked the small group approach and getting away from climbing centres, Mike’s climbing expertise is brilliant and I thought we were going to have a range of ages and experience and I could see that Rock and Moor were up for leading that sort of group. Thanks for sharing your love of rock climbing in this way and for supporting more people getting out there and having a go!“
“I wanted to take my 2 teenage boys rock climbing on Dartmoor and am delighted to have discovered Rock and Moor. I was trying to book a half day session for family members of various ages and abilities. Helen was so helpful at guiding my booking. Very easy directions for meeting Mike in the most stunning of locations on Dartmoor. He was so encouraging and his expertise was so apparent and very reassuring as he guided us through learning to belay, and we managed 2 climbs and an abseil. A great intro into trad climbing and my boys are desperate to do more!”
“Great morning out with Mike for a “Taster Session” at Dewerstone. My (14 year old) daughter and I had limited indoor climbing experience and no outdoor climbing experience. Mike put us at our ease, and was extremely patient. He has a lifetime of climbing experience and lots of local knowledge too. Don’t hesitate to book!”
“Absolute 10/10 experience. I booked a surprise climbing instruction day with Mike for my partner’s birthday (we do indoor bouldering and this was our first go at outdoor climbing).
Mike was so patient, easy going and attentive, giving us a ropes 101 then getting into the climbs. He has an easy instructional touch and great intuition, giving tips where they’re needed but equally leaving us to it to problem solve where we were comfortable doing that
Mike was super generous with his time. We got in loads of climbing and he helped us progress to some trickier climbs that I wouldn’t have thought we were up to! It seems he can just scale the day to work to any ability level.
Helen was great to deal with throughout the booking process – responsive and engaged to make sure we were all set for an epic day out.
Can’t recommend this enough and we’ll absolutely be back for follow up days out! Thanks Mike and Helen, you’ve both been lovely to deal with.”
“Fabulous… it was a day like no other…it literally went above and beyond my expectations.. I will be back..”
“Climbing Abseiling Dartmoor:
Choosing Rock & Moor to take three novice teenagers climbing on Dartmoor for a day—under the expert guidance of Mike—proved to be thoroughly enjoyable, rewarding, and, above all, safe.
Mike selected a tor within one of Dartmoor’s temperate rainforests, which not only offered challenging climbing but also provided shelter from the day’s intermittent downpours. The views didn’t disappoint either.
Mike clearly explained and consistently reinforced rope-handling techniques, whether for abseiling or belaying. This all built up to what must have been a 50-foot abseil to finish off the day.
A big thank you to Mike—my thirteen-year-olds and I are already looking forward to another Rock & Moor experience!”
“My daughter and I had a great day climbing with Mike on Dartmoor. It was so good to get out of our comfort zone, challenge ourselves and be in nature. Mike is very knowledgeable and we felt confident climbing under his guidance. Thoroughly recommend.”
My son & I had an incredible morning climbing with Mike. I’d never climbed with ropes before but Mike was extremely experienced and a great instructor – we felt very safe and learnt a lot. I’d highly recommend Rock and Moor!
